Heather joined the historical society after getting interested in creating a better map to show the evolution of the Crystal City Limits over time. As a GIS Professional (mapmaker/cartographer) and generally a technically savvy person, her skills have helped the society tell the story of our community. While relatively a newcomer (10+ year resident), she loves learning about the history of wherever she is and conveying these stories through the use of maps and technology.
Therese and her family have lived in Crystal for 30+ years. In one form or another, she has been involved in our wonderful community ever since.
In 2016, Therese was in her first run for City Council. She was out campaigning one nice fall day and knocked on the door of a then-current council member. They talked about a task force that had been established and one of the goals of the task force was to establish a Crystal Historical Society – which was formed in 2018.
Crystal is a unique and vibrant community and has great stories to share and preserve. We welcome anyone who has lived or visited Crystal on this journey to join our efforts.
Steve is a founding member of the Crystal Historical Society. He was looking to be more involved in our community when there was a push for a historical society to get organized. While relatively a newcomer (10+ year resident), he takes an interest in history and understanding the forces that took place to make the city we live in today.
Gary was raised in Crystal, educated through the Robbinsdale School District, and a graduate of Cooper High School. He has enjoyed seeing the growth of our community throughout the years. His interests are photography and history, and he has traveled extensively. Gary saw an article in the Sun Post Newspaper when the society was forming and thought, "I would like to volunteer and contribute something back based on my life and times of living in Crystal, MN."
Our society wouldn't be much without our members. While we are still a small group, we hope to grow and garner interest in our society.
Special recognition goes to our founding members:
Ann Berger is a lifelong resident of Crystal and is exceptionally in tune with everything that goes on in the city. She watches CCX Media programming, reads the Sun Post, and attends city meetings. If you have a question about something related to the city, she is the perfect one to ask.
Ray Dahl served a long career working for the City of Crystal. He will admit, that when working for the city, if they were throwing out something that might be of historic value, he went and saved it. He has amassed his own collection of Crystal related documents and memorabilia. He is a great teller of history too. He was prominently featured in Our Town's Story by CCX Media.
James Einfeldt-Brown is a lifelong resident of Crystal and is a wealth of information about its history. He understands that we are still making history today, and it was his idea for us to do a time capsule with the construction of the new public safety building.
Founding Members, from left to right: James Einfeldt-Brown, Ray Dahl, Bob Esnough, Carol Ahlgren, and Ann Berger.
Bob Esnough (1947-2021) was a founding member of the Crystal Historical Society. He enjoyed fishing, football, golf, and above all reading anything historical. When traveling he enjoyed visiting historical sites and museums. He was a wealth of information and was a great contributor to the historical society.
Carol Ahlgren (1957-2021) was a founding member of the Crystal Historical Society. She was a true historian. She had a degree in History, and in her graduate program she focused on Historic and Cultural Landscape Preservation and Landscape History. While living in Nebraska she worked for or was involved with: the Nebraska State Historic Preservation Office, the Society for Commercial Archaeology, the Lincoln Highway Association, and the National Park Service coordinator for National Historic Landmarks. After moving to Crystal, Minnesota, she became a board member of the Jefferson Highway Association, a highway that historically followed West Broadway through Crystal, and she was involved with Restore Lilac Way where she helped save Graeser Park in neighboring Robbinsdale.
